N–RTH
The world is bigger than your feed.
Somewhere along the way, technology became very good at giving us more of what we already like.
Listen to one thing and you'll get twenty more like it.
Watch one video and suddenly that's your world.
Click on one argument and you'll be given a hundred reasons to stay angry about it.
It's efficient.
But a good life isn't built entirely from efficiency.
It needs curiosity.
It needs difficulty.
It needs people who disagree with you.
It needs old ideas and new ones. Things made with your hands. Places you've never been. Books you wouldn't normally pick up. Conversations that run too late. Skills you're terrible at until, slowly, you're not.
It needs things you didn't know to search for.
CHARACTER STILL MATTERS
There are qualities that never really go out of date.
Strength with restraint.
Confidence without arrogance.
Responsibility.
Courage.
Loyalty.
Humour.
Curiosity.
Being useful when things go wrong.
Taking care of the people around you.
Building something worth leaving behind.
None of us gets all of that right.
But they're still things worth aiming for.
And perhaps that's part of finding your North: deciding what kind of person you want to become, then trying to live a little closer to it.
THE GOOD STUFF IS STILL OUT THERE
The world is not just politics, work, bills and bad news.
There are mountains to climb.
Things to build.
Games to play.
Meals worth travelling for.
Great books nobody has told you about.
Extraordinary episodes of history.
People quietly mastering difficult things.
Friends you haven't met yet.
And an astonishing amount that you still don't know.
That's good news.
Because being interested in the world makes the world more interesting.
DON'T OPTIMISE EVERYTHING
Not every hour needs to be productive.
Not every hobby needs to become a side hustle.
Not every walk needs to improve your VO₂ max.
Not every book needs to teach you seven habits.
Some things are worth doing because they are difficult.
Some because they are beautiful.
Some because they are ridiculous.
And some because they're fun.
That's enough.
KEEP MOVING
You don't need to have everything figured out.
Most of us don't.
Pick a direction.
Learn something.
Make something.
Go somewhere.
Get stronger.
Call your friend.
Ask a better question.
Change your mind when the evidence demands it.
Then keep going.
Find your North.
